Calalang Residence

Client:

Mr. & Mrs. Calalang

Year:

2009

The Calalang Residence is a unique architectural project born out of resilience and innovation. Originally built as a bungalow, this home underwent a major transformation in 2009 following the devastating effects of Typhoon Ondoy. After experiencing severe flooding, the homeowners decided to future-proof their home by adding a second floor and a terrace to ensure safety and comfort in case such disasters occur again.

Innovative Structural Reinforcement
One of the biggest challenges in this project was that the original bungalow’s columns were not designed to support a second story. To overcome this, additional reinforcements were introduced, making use of steel framing for the second floor structure and steel decking for the slab, ensuring both durability and stability. To reduce overall weight, EPS lightweight concrete panels were used for the walls—an efficient and sustainable solution.

Sustainable & Repurposed Materials
The Calalang Residence also embraced sustainable building practices. Salvaged materials such as lumber, marble tiles, and narra parquet flooring were repurposed, preserving both resources and the home’s character. This blend of old and new materials not only reduced waste but also gave the project a unique sense of history and continuity.

Modern Resilience Through Design
With its modern façade, strong structure, and smart material use, the Calalang Residence stands as a testament to adaptive architecture in the Philippines. More than just a renovation, it represents how thoughtful design can transform a tragedy into an opportunity for a safer, stronger, and more beautiful home.
