GN Farm Residence

Client:

Mrs. G. Nuval

Year:

2009

Nestled within the lush landscape of Silang, Cavite, the GN Farm Residence was envisioned as a modest weekend retreat that embraces the tranquility of rural living while providing the essential comforts of a modern home. Originally designed in 2009, the residence demonstrates how thoughtful architectural planning can maximize a compact footprint without compromising spatial quality, functionality, or visual character. Comprising a 35-square-meter ground floor and a 15-square-meter loft, the home offers an efficient 50-square-meter living environment that feels open, airy, and connected to nature.

The design is defined by its dramatic asymmetrical roof form, which serves both aesthetic and environmental purposes. The high-pitched roof creates generous interior volume, allowing the loft to overlook the living area while promoting natural ventilation through the stack effect. Deep roof overhangs provide shade from the tropical sun and protection against heavy rains, reducing heat gain while extending the usable outdoor living space.

Inspired by vernacular farm architecture, the residence adopts a warm and honest material palette highlighted by textured wall finishes, exposed structural elements, timber accents, and operable louvers. Large openings frame views of the surrounding landscape while encouraging abundant daylight and cross ventilation, reinforcing the connection between the indoor spaces and nature. The covered lanai functions as an extension of the living area, creating a welcoming space for family gatherings, outdoor dining, and quiet moments overlooking the farm.

Internally, the layout is carefully organized to maximize efficiency. The ground floor accommodates the living and dining area, kitchen, bedroom, toilet and bath, and lanai, while the loft provides additional sleeping or recreational space overlooking the main living area. Built-in shelving and integrated storage solutions further enhance the functionality of the compact floor plan, demonstrating that smaller homes can remain highly livable through intelligent planning.

More than a small countryside house, the GN Farm Residence reflects KDA Design + Architecture's early exploration of tropical architecture that balances simplicity, climate responsiveness, and efficient space planning. Its timeless form, sustainable passive design strategies, and enduring functionality embody the firm's philosophy of creating architecture that is purposeful, context-sensitive, and designed to enrich everyday living.
